Artist's Statement   I am a portrait painter fascinated by the infinite variety of facial form. I attempt close observation of the sitter’s appearance and character expressed by means of a composition and a variety of marks that create a lively, painterly image. My method of working on a portrait is to progress from the general to the particular, vigorously, with loose brushwork and whenever possible work primarily from life. Digital photographs may be used in a supporting role, in particular to provide details of surroundings when the sitter is short of time. I mostly paint in acrylic, but might over-paint with oil, and often like to draw into the portrait in the later stages with water-soluble pastel. I use the computer while working on a portrait to rapidly explore a wide range of pictorial options

Statement      I prefer to work from life, but will use photographs as the sole reference when the subject is not available.
I usually paint in acrylic and occasionally draw into the portrait in the later stages with water-soluble pastel or over-paint in oils.
Two sittings each of two hours, separated by at least a week, are ideal and are usually sufficient to complete the bulk of the work which is then refined in the studio .
When a portrait is virtually complete an A4 digital photographic print is sent to the client so that he or she has the opportunity to request reasonable changes before delivery.
John Davenport's prices exclude any travel, accommodation expenses and delivery charges.
Framing can be arranged, if required, at an additional cost.

Press Quotes
RBSA Newsletter, Winter 2001 - The Beatrix Turner Prize
"This prize was awarded, as stated, 'for excellence', John's portrait was both technically good and was executed with wit and exuberance. His subject came, without strain, through the vigorously worked medium and asserted itself, as a good portrait should, as being a personality beyond ourselves. We felt that this maturely expressive presentation, was the most appropriate winner of the Award" .
