Portfolio for Lucy McKie ROI - Commissionaportrait

Lucy chose at a very early age to become a portrait painter. Her fascination with personality, faces and art made it a natural choice. She began accepting portrait commissions aged 19, and has worked steadily based at her studio in Yorkshire. Her love of portraiture and capturing the "essence" of a person can be seen in her work. After becoming Yorkshire Artist of the year, her work was featured on BBC Television, and many interesting sitters from all walks of life became her subjects. Lucy's portraiture style is traditional yet with a modern twist, and aims to reflect the sitter in a positive and warm way.

Artist's Statement   "Portraiture is one of the few art forms in which the artist really needs to reflect not only his or her tastes and preferences but also crucially, those of the client and sitter. To me a portrait is to some degree a joint effort - although I the painter create the portrait, I very much take on board my clients wishes and their input. This makes the whole process very enjoyable for all involved and a memorable event.
I always want my client to be delighted with the finished portrait, and for them to feel they have a portrait that truly reflects not simply their likeness but also their personality and spirit. I have loved the process of every portrait I've ever painted, and have always been intrigued and fascinated by each individual sitter.
I set out to show my sitter at their best - this is not the same as flattery, I simply wish to create a portrait they will be happy with. For me the joy of portraiture is creating a painting the sitter will be proud of, and one that will record a special moment in time positively.
Ultimately a portrait is about trust and communication - the sitter needs to trust that the painter will create the right portrait, and the painter needs to listen carefully to the sitter and their aims for the perfect portrait."

Statement      Lucy is more than happy to have sittings at her country studio, or the home or work place of the sitter, providing there is a well lit room in which the sitting may take place. During a sitting, she will take a large amount of digital photographs, making up what is essentially a "photographic sketchbook." This helps her gain the maximum amount of information and reference for later careful study.
She is keen not to intrude upon the time of the sitter unnecessarily, and can usually have just one or two sittings if required. She always prefers to have a long talk with the client on the day of the sitting to listen carefully to their ideas and thoughts on the portrait, to ensure she understands the portrait they would hope to have. She will discuss clothing, pose, mood and overall composition with the client. She is also keen to absorb information about the personality of the sitter so as to reflect their true self within the portrait. Her aim is always to create the perfect portrait for the client, and she does this by gathering photographic reference, composition sketches and listening very carefully!
When producing posthumous portraits, Lucy obviously work solely from photographs, but also likes to discuss the personality and life of the sitter with those who knew them best. This creates a tangible link to the sitter which helps Lucy focus on their most positive and important attributes.
Lucy's portraits are completed unframed, but she is more than happy to be in charge of framing, or offer her advice - whichever is preferred.
